Position Description

The University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking faculty for a position as Research Scientist with interest and expertise in emergency medicine research. Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level and to either the tenure track or clinical/research (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical and research experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of scholarly productivity, along with a background of exceptional clinical care and a clear commitment to education.

Research Division Overview

Research is central to the mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Research Division is dedicated to cultivating a collaborative, well-supported environment that enables investigators to excel. Our research enterprise is funded by a comprehensive portfolio of federal and industry grants and encompasses clinical, basic science, and translational research. The Division includes federally funded investigators and a federally funded research laboratory. We offer an outstanding setting for faculty seeking to develop impactful, clinically integrated research programs that allow investigators to focus on innovation, discovery, and scholarship that advances patient care.

The Research Division is supported by strong infrastructure and resources to drive research success and support investigators at every stage of their career. These include:



  1. Substantial protected research time so faculty can focus on innovation, discovery, and impactful scholarship.


  2. 24-hour in-house research assistant coverage to support 24/7 enrollment of participants in the ED.


  3. Three full-time PhD-level faculty and staff dedicated to data management and analysis.


  4. A dedicated training programs coordinator who provides collaborative research co-mentorship for undergraduate students, graduate students, medical students, residents, and fellows.


  5. Established partnerships across the University that support interdisciplinary collaboration, including opportunities for secondary faculty appointments.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Physician-Scientist or Research Faculty member is expected to establish and sustain a competitively funded research program (NIH or equivalent extramural funding) and actively engage in interdisciplinary research related to Emergency Medicine, although prior funding is not required prior to appointment. Responsibilities include conducting emergency care research, including clinical, health services, translational/basic science, or implementation science research.

Physician candidates will also perform assigned clinical duties at one of the University of Iowa Health Emergency Department practice sites.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

 

Education Requirement:

Applicants must have an MD, DO, and/or PhD.

Physician applicants require completion of an ACGME-accredited training program.

Required Qualifications:

Physician applicants must be board-eligible, or board certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine at the time of hire.

Graduate level research training (Masters or Doctorate level) or research fellowship.

Demonstrated record of achievement in scholarly work.

Desirable Qualifications:

Substantial scientific publication record.

Current of recent extramural funding.

Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
